Area Classification. Where ignition sources cannot be eliminated, and a flammable gas or dust atmosphere may be present, it is important to determine the extent and duration of the risk and to select the appropriate protected equipment. As the ATEX Directive now covers both electrical and non-electrical equipment, the cost of installing certified equipment could increase dramatically. The initial risk analysis is required by the ‘Use Directive’ and helps to determine what actions need to be taken, such as Area Classification or elimination of ignition sources.

Hazardous Areas ATEX Analysis An initial risk assessment on the sources of ignition and types of explosive materials (gas and dust) following the methodology suggested in BS EN 1127-1:1998 (Explosion prevention and protection) can identify the basic steps that need to be taken to reduce the risks.

ATEX Directive 94/9/EC Hazardous Area Equipment has been around for many years and until the publication of the ATEX Directive; only electrical equipment was covered for certification for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. Equally, prior to ATEX, the market was driven by pressure from insurance agencies, as certification was not mandatory. From July 2003 the situation changes considerably. Compliance with the Directive will be mandatory.

Mechanical Equipment

There are now a series of standards published for mechanical safety requirements, under BSEN 13463 Series. With new assessment criteria required and new concepts to be accommodated.
